Story 1: God Creates Light

[Song] “Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life.  Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life.”

Hello, I’m Mrs. B!  Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.

You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com

Today I want to teach you two words.  The first word is “create”.  Can you say it?  Create.  Create.

“Create” means to make something new, something that did not exist before.  So, we say “the artist creates artwork every day” but we say, “the boy makes his bed every day”.  The artist makes something new.  He creates artwork.  The boy does not make something new.  He does not create his bed.  He makes his old bed look neat again.

The second word is the verb separate.  Repeat after me.  Separate.  Separate.  To separate means to put in different places.  We separate the shell of an egg from the egg inside the shell.  Sometimes we separate the yellow part of the egg from the white part of the egg.

When used as an adjective, the word is spelled the same way, but is pronounced “separut”.  Can you hear the difference?  Verb: Separate.  Adjective: Separut.  Here’s a sentence using both: I will separate the big and the small plates into separate stacks.

Okay, now let’s hear a story that uses both our words, create and separate.

This story is called “God creates light”, and it is the first story in the Bible.

In the beginning God created the sky and the earth.

Did humans create the sky and the earth?  No.  Humans did not create the sky or the earth.
Who created?  God created.
When did God create?  God created in the beginning.  God created at the start of time.
What did God create?  God created the sky and the earth.

The earth was empty and had no form.

“Empty” means it had nothing on it.  There were no plants, no animals, and no people.

In the beginning, was the earth full?  No, the earth was not full.  The earth was empty.

Darkness covered the ocean,

Did light cover the ocean?  No, light did not cover the ocean.
What covered the ocean?  Darkness covered the ocean.

and God’s Spirit was moving over the water.

Were the fish moving?  No, there were no fish.
Who was moving?  God’s Spirit was moving.
Was God’s Spirit moving over the land?  No, there was no land.
Where was God’s Spirit moving?  God’s Spirit was moving over the water.

Then God said, “Let there be light!”

Did man say the first words?  No, man did not say the first words.
Who said the first words?  God said the first words.
What were the first words?  The first words were, “Let there be light.”
What did God say?  God said, “Let there be light!”

And there was light.
What happened when God said, “Let there be light”?  There was light.
Who created the light?  God created the light.
How did God create the light?  God created the light by speaking.

God saw that the light was good.
Was the light bad?  No, the light was not bad.  The light was good.
Who saw that the light was good?  God saw that the light was good.
Who decides if something is good or bad?  God decides if something is good or bad.

So he separated the light from the darkness.
Who separated the light?  God separated the light.
What did God do to the light?  God separated the light.
What did God separate the light from?  God separated the light from the darkness.

God named the light “day” and the darkness “night.”
Who gave names?  God gave names.
What did God name?  God named the light and the darkness.
What did God name the light?  God named the light, “day”.
What did God name the darkness?  God named the darkness, “night”.

Evening passed, and morning came.
Did morning come first?  No, morning did not come first.   Evening came first.  Then morning came.
Did morning come second?  Yes, morning came second.  Evening passed, and morning came.

This was the first day.
How many hours are in one day?  There are twenty four hours in one day.
What happened on the first day?  On the first day, God created and separated and named.
What did God create on the first day?  On the first day, God created light.
What did God separate on the first day?  On the first day, God separated the light from the darkness.
What did God name on the first day?  On the first day, God named the light “day” and the darkness “night”.

Let’s listen to the whole story together.

In the beginning God created the sky and the earth. The earth was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and God’s Spirit was moving over the water.
Then God said, “Let there be light!” And there was light. God saw that the light was good. So he separated the light from the darkness. God named the light “day” and the darkness “night.” Evening passed, and morning came. This was the first day.

This story is in the third person.  Now, let’s change the story to the first person.  This is how it would sound if God told the story.

In the beginning I created the sky and the earth. The earth was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and my Spirit was moving over the water.
Then I said, “Let there be light!” And there was light. I saw that the light was good. So I separated the light from the darkness. I named the light “day” and the darkness “night.” Evening passed, and morning came. This was the first day.
