Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life.”<br /></i><br />Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br /><br />You can read the written script for today’s lesson on lifelineenglish.com.<br /><br />Today I want to teach you three words.<br /><br />The first word is ceremony. Can you say ceremony? Ceremony. A ceremony is a special meeting of people. In a ceremony, the people honor and remember something important. For example, a graduation ceremony honors students who have finished studying in a school. <br /><br />Our next word is “wedding”. A wedding is a ceremony when a man and a woman get married. They promise to love each other until they die. How many weddings have you been to?<br /><br />Lastly, wine! Repeat the word “wine”. Good! Wine is a drink made from fermented grapes. People sometimes drink wine at ceremonies when they are happy.<br /><br />Okay, ready for the story? It’s called, “Jesus’ first miracle.”<br /><span><a name='more'></a></span><br /><b>On the third day there was a wedding. </b><br />What happened? A wedding. There was a wedding.<br />When was the wedding? The wedding was on the third day.<br /><br /><b>It took place at Cana in Galilee. </b><br />What took place? The wedding took place.<br />Where did the wedding take place? The wedding took place at Cana in Galiliee. Cana is a town, Galilee is a province.<br /><br /><b>Jesus’ mother was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.</b><br />Who was there? Jesus, his mother, and his disciples were there.<br />Where were they? They were at the wedding.<br />Was Jesus too busy to go to the wedding? No, Jesus was not too busy. Jesus went to the wedding. <br /><br /><b>When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”</b><br />What was gone? The wine was gone.<br />Who did Jesus’ mother tell? Jesus’ mother told Jesus. <br />Where did the wine go? The wine went into the guests’ mouths! The people drank all the wine!<br /><br /><b>Jesus answered, “Woman, why did you come to me? My time has not yet come.”</b><br />Who came to Jesus? Jesus’ mother came to Jesus.<br />Why did Jesus’ mother come to Him? She wanted Jesus to know about the problem.<br />What had not yet come? Jesus’ time had not yet come. <br /><br /><b>His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you to do.”</b><br />To whom did Jesus’ mother speak? Jesus’ mother spoke to the servants.<br />What did Jesus’ mother tell the servants to do? She told them to do whatever Jesus told them to do.<br />Should we do whatever Jesus tells us to do? Yes, we should!<br /><br /><b>In that place there were six stone water jars. The Jews used jars like these in their washing ceremony. Each jar held about 20 or 30 gallons.<br /></b>How many jars were there? Six jars were there.<br />What were the jars made of? The jars were made of stone.<br />What was in the jars? Water was in the jars.<br />How much water did each jar hold? Each jar held about 20 or 30 gallons of water. <br />What was the water for? The water was for the Jews to use in their washing ceremony. It was a part of their religion.<br /><br /><b>Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled the jars to the top.</b><br />Did the servants command Jesus? No, Jesus commanded the servants. He told them to fill the jars with water.<br />Did the servants obey Jesus? Yes, the servants obeyed Jesus. They did what he told them to do.<br />What did they fill the jars with? They filled the jars with water.<br />How full were the jars? The jars were full to the top.<br /><br /><b>Then he said to them, “Now take some out and give it to the master of the feast.”</b><br />What did Jesus want the servants to take? Jesus wanted the servants to take some of the water.<br />To whom must they give the water? They must give the water to the master of the feast.<br /><br /><div><b>So the servants took the water to the master. </b><br />Who took the water? The servants took the water.<br />To whom did they take the water? They took the water to the master.<br /><br /><b>The master tasted the water. It had become wine. </b><br />Who tasted it? The master tasted it.<br />What did the water become? The water became wine.<br />Was the water still water? No, the water was now wine!<br /><br /><b>He did not know where the wine came from. But the servants who brought the wine knew. </b><br />Where did the wine come from? The wine came from Jesus. Jesus changed the water into wine.<br />Who did not know where the wine came from? The master didn’t know.<br />Who knew where the wine came from? The servants knew.<br />Did the servants change the water into wine? No, Jesus changed the water into wine.<br /><br /><b>The master of the wedding called the groom. </b><br />Whom did the master call? The master called the groom. <br /><br /><b>He said to him, “People always serve the good wine first. Later, after the guests have drunk a lot, they serve the cheap wine."</b> <br />Which wine do people serve first? People serve the good wine first.<br />When do they serve the cheap wine? They serve the cheap wine after the guests have drunk a lot.<br /><br /></div><div><b>“But you have saved the good wine until now.”</b><br />Did the wine taste like cheap wine or good wine? The wine tasted good.<br />Who made the good wine? Jesus made the good wine.<br /><br /></div><div>Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br /><br /><b>On the third day there was a wedding. It took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. <br />When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”<br />Jesus answered, “Woman, why did you come to me? My time has not yet come.”<br />His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you to do.”<br />In that place there were six stone water jars. The Jews used jars like these in their washing ceremony. Each jar held about 20 or 30 gallons.<br />Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled the jars to the top.<br />Then he said to them, “Now take some out and give it to the master of the feast.”<br />So the servants took the water to the master. <br />The master tasted the water. It had become wine. He did not know where the wine came from. But the servants who brought the wine knew. The master of the wedding called the groom. <br />He said to him, “People always serve the good wine first. Later, after the guests have drunk a lot, they serve the cheap wine. But you have saved the good wine until now.”<br /><br /></b>Now I’m going to tell the story again, but this time, I’m going to say “shhhh” (like the sound of water running) instead of the word “water”, and I’m going to say “yum” instead of the word “wine”. “Yum” means that something tastes good. I will leave a short space before the “shhhh” or “yum”. See if you can say the right word (“shhh” or “yum”) before I do.<br /><br /></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"><div>On the third day there was a wedding. Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life.”</i></div><div><br /></div><div>Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.</div><div><br /></div><div>You can read the written script for today’s lesson on lifelineenglish.com.</div><div><br /></div><div>Today I want to teach you four words.</div><div><br /></div><div>The first word is baptize. Repeat after me: baptize. Good! To baptize means to dip a person under water and then lift them back out of the water immediately. Baptism has symbolic meaning, like wearing a wedding ring on your finger. If you are baptized, you are telling everyone, “I want to live in a new way. The way I used to live was evil. Now I want to do what is good.”</div><div> </div><div>Our next word is sandal. A sandal is a special kind of shoe. The top of a sandal is very open. Your foot can breathe. The sandal uses straps, often made of leather, to hold your foot. </div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><br /></div><div>Word three is “untie”. You probably can guess that “untie” is the opposite of “tie”. To untie means to loosen the rope or strap that is holding two things together. For example, I untied my horse from the post. He untied the boat from the dock.</div><div><br /></div><div>And the last word is “better”. Better is the word we use when we compare how good two things are. The thing that is more good is “better” than the other thing. Which is better: chocolate or peanut butter? I like tea better than coffee. </div><div><br /></div><div>Okay, ready for the story? It’s called, “The Lamb comes”</div><div><br /></div><div><b>They asked John, “If you’re not the Messiah, Elijah, or the Prophet, why are you baptizing?”</b></div><div>Who was John not? John was not the Messiah, Elijah, or the Prophet.</div><div>What was John doing? John was baptizing.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>John answered, “I baptize with water.” </b></div><div>Who baptized? John baptized.</div><div>Did John baptize with milk? No, John baptized with water. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>“But someone you don’t know is with you. He is the One who comes after me.” </b></div><div>Who was with them? Someone they didn’t know was with them.</div><div>Someone who didn’t know? The Jews didn’t know him.</div><div>Was he John? No, he came after John. </div><div>Who came before this One? John came before this One. John told people that Someone was coming after him. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>“I’m not good enough to untie his sandals!”</b></div><div>Who wasn’t good enough? John wasn’t good enough.</div><div>What was John not good enough to do? John wasn’t good enough to untie his sandals.</div><div>Whose sandals? The sandals of the man who was coming after John.</div><div>Who was better: John, or the man coming after John? The man coming after John was much better than John. John wasn’t good enough to do a very low job for the man.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>This happened at Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River.</b></div><div>What happened? John answered the people’s questions.</div><div>Where did this happen? This happened at Bethany. Bethany is the name of a small town.</div><div>What river was Bethany near? Bethany was near the Jordan River. </div><div>Which side of the river was Bethany on? Bethany was on the east side of the river.</div><div> </div><div><b>John was baptizing there.</b></div><div>What did John do there? John baptized there. </div><div>Why did John baptize in a river? John baptized in a river so that there was enough water. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. </b></div><div>Who did John see? John saw Jesus.</div><div>Did John come to Jesus? No, Jesus came to John.</div><div>When did Jesus come? Jesus came the next day. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>John said, “Look! The Lamb of God!”</b></div><div>What did John call Jesus? John called Jesus, “the Lamb of God”. </div><div>What did John tell the people to do? John told the people to look. </div><div>Who did John tell the people to look at? John told the people to look at Jesus. </div><div>Whose Lamb is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Lamb. Lambs are innocent; they do not sin. In the Old Testament, God told people to kill lambs to protect the people from God’s punishment for their sins. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>“He takes the sin of the world away!”</b></div><div>Who takes away? Jesus takes away.</div><div>What does Jesus take away? Jesus takes away sin.</div><div>Does John take away sin? No, Jesus takes away sin.</div><div>Does Jesus hide sin? No, Jesus takes away sin.</div><div>Whose sin does Jesus take away? Jesus takes away the sin of the world.</div><div>Does Jesus only take away the sins of good people? No, Jesus takes away the sin of the world.</div><div>Can Jesus take away the sin of men and women? Yes, Jesus takes away the sin of the world.</div><div>Can Jesus take away the sin of criminals? Yes, Jesus takes away the sin of the world. </div><div>Can Jesus take away the sin of drug dealers, and murderers, and prostitutes? Yes, Jesus takes away the sin of the world.</div><div>Did lambs take away sin? No, lambs only covered sin. Jesus takes away sin. Like the lambs, Jesus died to protect people from God’s punishment for their sins. Jesus experienced God’s punishment instead of the people. </div><div>Today, should we kill lambs to protect us from God’s punishment? No, Jesus is the perfect Lamb. If we trust in Jesus, God will not punish us. Jesus took our punishment. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>“This is the One I was talking about!”</b></div><div>Who was talking? John was talking.</div><div>Who was John talking about? John was talking about the One the people didn’t know, the One who was coming after John, the One whose sandals John was not good enough to untie. </div><div>Who was the One? This One was Jesus. </div><div><br /></div><div>Let’s listen to the whole story together.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>They asked John, “If you’re not the Messiah, Elijah, or the Prophet, why are you baptizing?”</b></div><div><b>John answered, “I baptize with water. This is the One I was talking about!”</b></div><div> </div><div>Different languages have different rules about the sequence that words must be arranged in. English is pretty flexible. I’m going to tell you the same story again. The meaning is the same, but the words are in a different order. Listen for the changes!</div><div><br /></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left;">They asked John, “Why are you baptizing, if you’re not the Messiah, Elijah, or the Prophet?”</div><div style="text-align: left;">John answered, “I baptize with water. There, John was baptizing. </div><div style="text-align: left;">John saw Jesus coming toward him the next day. John said, “Look! God’s Lamb! He takes away the world’s sin! This is the One about whom I was talking!” </div></blockquote><div> </div><div>What religious leader do you follow? There is only one person who can take away your sin. He is Jesus. Jesus was killed, like a lamb, to take away the sins of bad people. If you trust in Jesus, he will take away your sin. </div><div><br /></div><div>Let’s sing a short song about this story. Ready?</div><div><br /></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"><div>O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God; </div><div>I love the holy Lamb of God.</div><div>O wash me in His precious blood,</div><div>My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. </div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>Do you have questions? Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.</div><div><br /></div><div>You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.</div><div><br /></div><div>Today I want to teach you four words.</div><div><br /></div><div>The first word is “messiah”. Can you say that word? Mes-SI-ah. In the first part of the Bible, God promised to send the Messiah to the Jews to save them from their enemies. Now “messiah” means someone who rescues people from dangers or problems. Some people thought their country’s new president was the messiah. They believed he would fix the problems in their nation.</div><div><br /></div><div>The next word is “assistant”. As-SIS-tant. An assistant is a person who assists, or helps. An assistant is a helper. The manager asked his assistant to take the letters to the post office. </div><div><br /></div><div>You may know this word. Desert. Not “dessert”. Desert! Dessert is a sweet food usually eaten at the end of a meal. But a desert is a place that does not receive much rain. Deserts are dry and do not have many green plants. </div><div><br /></div><div>And the last word is easy to say but hard to spell! Straight. It rhymes with wait, date, and the number eight, but isn’t spelled like any of them! “Straight” describes something that is not bent or curved or crooked. Sit up straight! Don’t curve your back. The airplane flew in a straight line from London to Paris. </div><div><br /></div><div>Okay, ready for today’s story? It’s called, “Who are you?”</div><div><br /></div><div><b>The Jews in Jerusalem sent some priests and assistants to John.</b></div><div>Who was sent? Some priests and assistants were sent.</div><div>Who sent the priests and assistants? The Jews sent them.</div><div>Which Jews sent them? The Jews in Jerusalem sent them.</div><div>Where did the Jews send the priests and assistants? The Jews sent them to John.</div><div> </div><div><b>The Jews sent them to ask John, “Who are you?” </b></div><div>Why did the Jews send the priests and assistants? The Jews sent them to ask John a question.</div><div>What did the Jews want to know about John? The Jews wanted to know who he was.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>John came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah”.</b></div><div>Did John tell them who he was? No, John did not tell them who he was. He told them who he was not.</div><div>Did John claim to be the Messiah? No, John said, “I am not the Messiah.”</div><div> </div><div><b>“Then who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?” “I am not,” he said.</b></div><div>Elijah was a very famous prophet who lived about 800 years before John. The Bible says that Elijah will return to earth before the Messiah comes.</div><div>Was John Elijah? No, John was not Elijah. John was John. :) </div><div>Did John tell them who he was? No, John did not tell them who he was.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>“Are you the Prophet?” “No,” he answered.</b></div><div>Another famous prophet named Moses lived 1200 years before John. Moses promised that God would send another prophet like him. Moses did not say what the name of the prophet would be.</div><div>Was John this prophet? No, John was not this prophet. </div><div>Did John tell them who he was? No, John did not tell them who he was.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Then they said, “Who are you?” </b></div><div>Did the priests and assistants give up? No, they did not give up.</div><div>How many times did they ask John a question? They asked John a question 4 times. This is their fourth question.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>“Tell us, so we can give an answer to the people who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”</b></div><div>Why did they want John to answer them? They wanted to give an answer to the people who sent them.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>John replied using the words of the prophet Isaiah.</b> </div><div>Whose words did the people want to hear? They wanted to hear John’s words. They wanted to know what John said about himself.</div><div>Whose words did John use when he replied? John replied using the words of the prophet Isaiah.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>John said, “I am a voice shouting in the desert, ‘Make a straight road for the Lord!’”</b></div><div>Isaiah lived 700 years before John. Isaiah wrote the words that John said.</div><div>Where is the voice shouting? The voice is shouting in the desert.</div><div>What does the voice tell people to do? The voice tells people to make a straight road. </div><div>Who will travel on the road? The Lord will travel on the road!</div><div>Why must the road be straight? The road must be straight so that the Lord can arrive quickly and easily. </div><div><br /></div><div>Let’s listen to the whole story together. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>The Jews in Jerusalem sent some priests and assistants to John. The Jews sent them to ask John, “Who are you?” </b></div><div><b>John came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah”. </b></div><div><b>“Then who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?”</b></div><div><b>“I am not,” he said.</b></div><div><b>“Are you the Prophet?” </b></div><div><b>“No,” he answered.</b></div><div><b>Then they said, “Who are you? John said, “I am a voice shouting in the desert, ‘Make the road straight for the Lord!’”</b></div><div><br /></div><div>Now I will tell the story again. I will leave a space before I say some of the words. See if you can say the correct word before I do!</div><div><br /></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"><div>The Jews in Jerusalem sent some priests and... assistants to John. Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.</div><div><br /></div><div>You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.</div><div><br /></div><div>Today I want to teach you three words.</div><div><br /></div><div>The first word is glory. Glory means praise and honor, or something that deserves praise and honor. The Olympic runner won a gold medal. He earned glory for his country. People will praise his country because he won the competition. The old bank has lost its glory. That means the building is no longer beautiful. No one wants to praise the beauty of the building now. The glory of young men is their strength and the glory of old men is their grey hair. That means people honor young men because they are strong and people honor old men because they are wise. </div><div><br /></div><div>The next word is grace. Grace means politeness and kindness, and specifically, it means kindness toward people who don’t deserve it. He speaks with grace. He does not use rude words or curse. The waiter spilled coffee all over the restaurant table. But the woman sitting at the table showed grace to him. She helped clean it up and did not get angry. </div><div><br /></div><div>My last word today is exist. Can you repeat this word? Exist. Exist. Good! To exist means to be. It means to be real. Santa Claus does not exist. There is not a real person named Santa Claus in the world today. The earth exists. The earth has not always existed. God created the earth. God has always existed. There is not a time when God did not exist. Do you exist? Yes, you do. And so do I! </div><div><br /></div><div>Okay, let’s listen to the story. It’s called, “The Word Shows Us God”. </div><div><br /></div><div>When I ask a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answers with my answers. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>The Word became a human. </b></div><div>What did He become? He became a human.</div><div>Who became a human? The Word became a human.</div><div>Did the Word become an angel? No, the Word became a human.</div><div>Did the Word become a cow? No, the Word became a human.</div><div>Did a human become the Word? No, the Word became a human. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>He lived with us. </b></div><div>With whom did He live? He lived with us.</div><div>Who lived with us? The Word lived with us.</div><div>Did the Word live in a king’s house? No, the Word lived with us.</div><div>Did the Word live on the top of a mountain? No, the Word lived with us.</div><div>Did the Word hide in a cave? No, the Word lived with us. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>We saw His glory. It is the glory of the only Son, who came from the Father. </b></div><div>What did we see? We saw His glory.</div><div>Whose glory did we see? We saw the Word’s glory.</div><div>Who is the Word? The Word is the only Son.</div><div>Where did the Son come from? The Son came from the Father.</div><div>Did the Father come? No, the Son came.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>And the Word was full of grace and truth. </b></div><div>Who was full? The Word was full.</div><div>What was the Word full of? The Word was full of grace and truth.</div><div>Are we full of grace and truth? No, we are not full of grace and truth. We are full of anger and lies. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>John told about Him. </b></div><div>Whom did John tell about? John told about the Word.</div><div>Did John tell about the Roman emperor? No, John told about the Word.</div><div>Did John tell about Moses and the prophets? No, John told about the Word.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>John shouted, “This is the One I was talking about!” </b></div><div>Did John talk quietly? No, John shouted. </div><div>Who was John talking about? John was talking about the Word.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>“I said, ‘The One who comes after me is greater than me. He existed before I did.’” </b></div><div>Who said these words? John said these words.</div><div>Did Jesus come after John? Yes, Jesus came after John.</div><div>Who is greater: Jesus or John? Jesus is greater. Jesus is greater than John.</div><div>Who existed first: John or Jesus? Jesus existed first. John was born six months before Jesus. But Jesus existed before He became a human. </div><div>Who came before Jesus? John came before Jesus.</div><div>Who existed before John? Jesus existed before John.</div><div>Who is greater than John? Jesus is greater because Jesus existed before He became a human.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>All of us have received from His fullness. We received gift after gift. </b></div><div>Who has received? All of us have received.</div><div>Have all people received? Yes, all people have received.</div><div>From where did we receive? We received from His fullness. </div><div>From whose fullness did we receive? We received from the Word’s fullness.</div><div>Do you remember, what was the Word full of? (We talked about this a minute ago.) The Word was full of grace and truth.</div><div>What did we receive? We received gift after gift.</div><div>Did we receive only one gift? No, we received gift after gift.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>The law was given through Moses. </b></div><div>What was given? The law was given.</div><div>Who gave the law? God gave the law.</div><div>Through whom did God give the law? God gave the law through Moses.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. </b></div><div>What came? Grace and truth came.</div><div>Where did grace and truth come from? Grace and truth came from God.</div><div>Did grace and truth come through Moses? No, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. </div><div>Who is the Word? The Word is Jesus Christ. This is the first time that the story tells us the name of the Word. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>No human has ever seen God. </b></div><div>Has any human ever seen God? Humans have never seen God.</div><div>Has God seen humans? Yes, God alway sees humans.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>But the only Son is God. </b></div><div>Is the Son an angel? No, the Son is God.</div><div>Are there others like the Son? No, He is the Only Son. No one is like the Son.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>He is near to the Father’s side. </b></div><div>Who is near? The Son is near.</div><div>Is the Father far from the Son? No, the Father is near to the Son. The Son is near to the Father’s side. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>He showed us God.</b></div><div>Who showed God? The Son showed God.</div><div>To whom did the Son show God? The Son showed us God. (Or we can say, the Son showed God to us. The meaning of both sentences is the same.)</div><div><br /></div><div>Let’s listen to the whole story together.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>The Word became a human. He lived with us. We saw his glory. It is the glory of the only Son, who came from the Father. And the Word was full of grace and truth. John told about Him. John shouted, “This is the One I was talking about! I said, ‘The One who comes after me is greater than me. He existed before I did.’” All of us have received from His fullness. We received gift after gift. The law was given through Moses. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No human has ever seen God. But the only Son is God. He is near to the Father’s side. He showed us God. </b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>This story is written in the first person, from the perspective of us, humans. But what would it sound like if the Word, Jesus, told the story to us? Listen to the changes.</div><div><br /></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div style="text-align: left;">I became a human. I lived with you. You saw My glory. It is the glory of the only Son. I came from the Father. And I was full of grace and truth. John told about Me. John shouted that I am the One he was talking about! He said that I am greater than he was. I existed before John did. All of you have received from My fullness. You received gift after gift. The law was given through Moses. Grace and truth came through Me. No human has ever seen God. But I am God. I am near to the Father’s side. I showed you God. </div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>Do you need grace and truth? Come to Jesus. Do you want to see glory? Look at Jesus. Do you want to know God? Then you must meet Jesus. </div><div><br /></div><div>Do you have questions? You can write me. Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.</div><div><br /></div><div>You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.</div><div><br /></div><div>Today I want to teach you three words.</div><div><br /></div><div>The first word is recognize. Repeat after me. RE-cog-nize. Good job! To recognize means to know a person or thing because of something you learned or experienced before. The police officer recognized the criminal’s face. Even though I hadn’t seen my first grade English teacher in 40 years, I recognized her immediately. My dog recognized the black and white hairs of the skunk and ran away. </div><div><br /></div><div>The next word is own. Can you say own? Own can be a verb. It means to possess or to have. Do you rent your home, or own your home? If you own a home, it is your own home. That time, we used own as an adjective. It means the home belongs to you. Do you have your own car? Do you own a motorcycle? Should children have their own phones? </div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><br /></div><div>Our last word is receive. Do you recognize the word receive? We have used it in other stories. To receive means to get, to accept, to be given something, to welcome. I received a phone call from the bank. She received her friend warmly into her own home. He received a check for $2000! </div><div><br /></div><div>Okay, ready for today’s story? It’s called, “Receive Him and believe Him!”</div><div><br /></div><div><b>The true light who gives light to everyone was coming into the world.</b> </div><div>Who gives light? The true light gives light.</div><div>To whom does the true light give light? The true light gives light to everyone.</div><div>Where did the true light come? The true light came into the world.</div><div>Who is the true light? The Word, Jesus, is the true light.</div><div>When did Jesus come into the world? Jesus came into the world about two thousand years ago. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>The Word was in the world.</b></div><div>Get ready for some tongue twisters! :) </div><div>Where was the Word? The Word was in the world.</div><div>Was the world in the Word? No, the Word was in the world. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>And the world was made through him. But the world did not recognize him.</b> </div><div>Who made the world? The Word made the world.</div><div>What did the Word make? The Word made the world.</div><div>Did the world recognize the Word? His own people did not receive him. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Some people did receive him and did believe in his name.</b> </div><div>Did anyone receive the Word? Yes, some people did receive him.</div><div>Who believed in Him? The people who received him believed in him.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>He gave them the right to become children of God.</b> </div><div>Can people become children of God? No, not all people have the right.</div><div>Who gives the right to become children of God? The Word gives the right to become a child of God.</div><div>To whom does the Word give this right? The Word gives this right to people who receive Him. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>They were not born through their parents.</b> </div><div>Were they born through their parents? No, they weren’t. No, your parents cannot make you a child of God. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>They were not born because of a person’s desire or a man’s decision.</b></div><div>Were they born because of a person’s desire? The past tense is <i>overcame</i>. To overcome means to defeat or conquer. She overcame cancer. The Allies overcame Germany, Japan, and Italy in World War Two. </div><div><br /></div><div>The next word is <i>lawyer</i>. Can you say “lawyer”? Good job! A lawyer is a person who helps people with situations that relate to the law. If you go to court, a lawyer can make arguments to help you overcome. Lawyers know the laws. Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English. You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you three words.
The first word is <i>while</i>. Can you say “while”? Good! “While” can mean simply an amount of time. “I’m going to sleep for a while.” While can also be used to join two sentences into one. For example, “I’m going to sleep while you make dinner.” Or, “While you make dinner, I’m going to sleep.” When “while” is used to join sentences, it means “during the time that”. “I’m going to sleep during the time that you make dinner.”<br />
<br />
The next word is <i>wander</i>. Can you hear the difference between the words “<i>wonder</i>” and “<i>wander</i>”? To “wonder” means to think about something that is difficult to know. “I wonder why many ladies like to shop.” To “wander” means to move around to different places without purpose or direction. “The man wandered around the mall while he waited for his wife to shop.”<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
The last word is <i>anymore</i>. Don’t confuse this with the two separate words “any” and “more”. For example, in the sentence “I don’t have any more time”, “any” and “more” are two separate words. “Anymore” is just one word. It is used in negative sentences. It means something has changed. What was one way before, is not that way now. For example, “She does not work here anymore”. This means that she worked here in the past, but she does not work here now.<br />
<br />
Today’s story happened after Lifeline English story number 12, “The Two Gifts”. You should listen to that story before you listen to this story. At this time, the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, have only two sons. Their sons' names are Cain and Abel. Cain is angry because God accepted Abel’s sacrifice. God did not accept Cain’s sacrifice. Today’s story is called, “The First Murder”.<br />
<br />
When I ask a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answer with my answer.<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>“Now you will be cursed in your work with the ground.”</b><br />

Who will be cursed? Cain will be cursed.<br />

Will Cain have good crops? No, Cain will not have good crops.<br />
What will not produce good crops? The ground will not produce good crops.<br />
For whom will the ground not produce good crops? The ground will not produce good crops for Cain.<br />

<br />
<b>“You will wander on the earth.”</b><br />
Who will wander? Cain will wander.<br />
Where will Cain wander? Cain will wander on the earth.<br />
Will Cain live in one place? No, Cain will wander.<br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<br />
<b>Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” </b><br />
<b>While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. </b><br />
<b>God said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” </b><br />
<b>Cain said, “I don’t know! Am I my brother’s guard?” </b><br />
<b>God said, “What have you done? Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground. Now you will be cursed in your work with the ground. It received your brother’s blood from your hand. When you farm the ground, it will not produce good crops for you anymore. You will wander on the earth.”</b><br />
<br />
This story uses a lot of direct quotations from God and Cain. I will tell you the story again using indirect quotations. Listen to how it sounds!<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Cain asked his brother Abel to go out to the field. While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
God asked Cain where his brother Abel was.
Cain said he did not know, and asked whether he was his brother’s guard.
God asked Cain what he had done. He told Cain that his brother’s blood was crying out to Him from the ground. He told Cain that now he would be cursed in his work with the ground. The ground received his brother’s blood from his hand. God told Cain that when he farmed the ground, it would not produce good crops for him any more, and that he would wander on the earth. </blockquote>
Abel was the first human to die. He did not die because he was old. He died because Cain killed him. Cain killed Abel because Cain’s actions were bad and Abel’s actions were good. Abel trusted in God. Cain did not trust in God. When someone is killed because they trust in God, we call them a martyr. Abel was the first martyr.<br />
<br />
In this story, we see both God’s justice and His kindness. God punished Cain for killing Abel. But God also gave Cain an opportunity to confess his sin. God did not kill Cain immediately. God gave Cain more time to live. Has God been kind to you?<br />

I’ve got a couple more words to teach you today. The first word is “dear”. There are two words that are pronounced “dear” but they have different spellings. D-E-E-R is a wild animal that is often hunted for its meat and antlers. The word I want to teach you today is D-E-A-R. D-E-A-R means “special” or “loved” or “highly valued”. Often we begin letters by writing “Dear” in front of the name of the person we are writing to. </div>
<div>

The second word is “tent”. Can you say “tent”? A tent is a building made of cloth. Usually tents only have one room. Tents can be quickly taken down and put up. People who hike or camp often sleep in tents. </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let’s listen to the whole story together.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Jesus brought Peter, James, and John up on a tall mountain. No other people were there.<br />Jesus’ face became bright like the sun. His clothes became as white as light.<br />Then Moses and Elijah appeared, and talked with Jesus.<br />Peter told Jesus, “If you want, I will put up three tents here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”<br />While Peter was talking, a bright cloud covered them. A voice came from the cloud.<br />“This is my dear Son. I am very happy with Him. You must listen to Him!”<br />Peter, James, and John were very afraid. They fell facedown on the ground. But Jesus came and touched them. He said, “Get up. Don’t be afraid.”<br />When they looked up, they saw only Jesus.</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This story is told in the third person. Now I will tell it to you again in the first person. This is what the story would sound like if Peter told it. Listen for the changes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Jesus brought James, John, and me up on a tall mountain. No other people were there.<br />
Jesus’ face became bright like the sun. His clothes became as white as light.<br />
Then Moses and Elijah appeared, and talked with Jesus.<br />
I told Jesus, “If you want, I will put up three tents here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”<br />
While I was talking, a bright cloud covered us. A voice came from the cloud.<br />
“This is my dear Son. I am very happy with Him. You must listen to Him!”<br />
James, John and I were very afraid. We fell facedown on the ground. But Jesus came and touched us. He said, “Get up. Don’t be afraid.”<br />
When we looked up, we saw only Jesus.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the original story, the three friends were listed as “Peter, James, and John”. But when Peter told the story, it became “James, John and I” (or “me”). When we list a group of nouns or pronouns that includes the personal pronoun “I” or “me”, the personal pronoun always goes last in the list. So, for example, it is never correct to say “me and you”. The correct way is to say, “you and me”. In this way, the English language teaches us to respect other people more than we respect ourselves. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Whom do you respect? There have been many prophets and wise men throughout history. Moses and Elijah loved and served God. They were famous. But Jesus is more special than anyone else. Only Jesus is God’s dear Son. Only Jesus always made God happy. We must not worship or follow Moses, Elijah, or any other prophet. We must worship and listen to Jesus. </div>

Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I have three new words for you. Ready?<br />
<br />
The first word is <i>leprosy</i>. Can you say it? Lep-ro-sy. Good job! Leprosy is a very bad disease. It is also called Hansen’s disease. People who have leprosy are called “lepers”. Leprosy deadens nerves so that the lepers can no longer feel pain. Lepers sometimes lose their fingers, toes, or even hands, feet and noses, because they cannot feel pain. <br />
<br />
The next word is <i>priest</i>. A priest is a person who helps other people know and worship God. Before Jesus came, God used priests to help His people. The priests helped the people to be forgiven by God, to worship God, and to obey God. They also examined people who had diseases, to stop their diseases from spreading to other people.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The last word today is <i>foreigner</i>. Repeat after me. For-eign-er. Good! A foreigner is a person from a different country. Many foreigners come to the United States to find work. But some foreigners come to cause problems. Some people are afraid of foreigners. <br />
<br />
Okay, ready for the story? It’s called, “The Thankful Leper”. <br />
<br />
When I ask a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answer with my answer.<br />
<br />

How many men met Jesus? Ten.<br />

<br />
<b>They yelled from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”</b>Did the men stay far from Jesus? Yes, the men stayed at a distance. Because the men had leprosy, they were not allowed to come close to people. They had to stay far away so that other people would not get their disease.<br />

Did Jesus touch the men? No, Jesus did not touch the men.<br />
Did Jesus talk to the men? Yes, Jesus talked to the men.<br />
What did Jesus tell the men to do? Jesus told the men to go and show themselves to the priests. When a leper was healed, he had to go to the priests. The priests would examine him. If the leper was healed, the priests would permit the man to live close to people. There was no more danger of his leprosy spreading to other people.<br />
<br />
<b>While the ten men were going, they were healed.</b><br />
How many men went? All ten men went.<br />
Where did the men go? The men went to the priests.<br />
Why did the men go to the priests? The men went to the priests because Jesus told them to go. The men were obeying Jesus. The priests would see if the men were healed. <br />

<br />
<b>One of the men went back to Jesus.</b><br />
How many men went back? One man went back.<br />
Where did the man go? He went back to Jesus.<br />
<br />
<b>The man praised God loudly.</b><br />
Who did the man praise? The man praised God.<br />

<br />
<b>He fell down in front of Jesus to thank Him.</b><br />
Who fell down? The man fell down.<br />
Where did the man fall down? The man fell down in front of Jesus.<br />
Why did the man fall down? The man fell down in front of Jesus to thank Him.<br />
Whom did the man thank? The man thanked Jesus.<br />
Why did the man thank Jesus? The man thanked Jesus because Jesus healed him.<br />
<br />
<b>The man was a foreigner.</b><br />
Was the man a Jew? No, the man was a foreigner. <br />
Was Jesus a Jew? Yes, Jesus was a Jew.<br />
God gave His book to Jews so that they could know Him and worship Him. God did not give His book to foreigners. <br />
<br />
<b>Jesus said, “Weren’t all ten healed? Where are the other nine? Only a foreigner came back to praise God?”</b>How many men did not come back? Nine men did not come back.<br />
Were the nine men healed? Yes, the nine men were healed. All ten were healed.<br />
Which man came back? A foreigner came back.<br />
Why did the foreigner come back? The foreigner came back to thank God.<br />
Did the nine Jews come back to thank their God? No, the nine Jews did not come back.<br />

<br />
<b>Then Jesus said to the man, “Get up and go.”</b><br />

<br />
<b>“Your faith has healed you.”</b><br />
What healed the man? His faith healed him.<br />
Whose faith healed the man? The man’s faith healed him.<br />
Who did the man have faith in? The man had faith in Jesus.<br />
Should we have faith in Jesus? Yes, we should have faith in Jesus.<br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<br />
<b>Ten men with leprosy met Jesus. They yelled from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”<br />Jesus saw them. He said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”<br />While the ten men were going, they were healed.<br />One of the men went back to Jesus. The man praised God loudly. He fell down in front of Jesus to thank Him. The man was a foreigner.<br />Jesus said, “Weren’t all ten healed? Where are the other nine? Only a foreigner came back to praise God?”<br />Then Jesus said to the man, “Get up and go. Your faith has healed you.”</b><br />
<br />
This story is in the third person, past tense. I will tell it to you again. This time, it will be in the present tense, first person. It will be as if the foreigner is telling the story. <br />
<br />
Ten of us with leprosy meet Jesus. We yell from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”<br />
Jesus sees us. He says, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”<br />
While the ten of us are going, we are healed.<br />
I go back to Jesus. I praise God loudly. I fall down in front of Jesus to thank Him. I am a foreigner.<br />
Jesus says, “Weren’t all ten healed? Where are the other nine? Only a foreigner came back to praise God?”<br />
Then Jesus says to me, “Get up and go. Your faith has healed you.”<br />
<br />
The nine men obeyed Jesus to get healed. They loved being healed more than they loved Jesus. The foreign man loved Jesus more than he loved being healed. He came back to thank Jesus. <br />
<br />
Why do you obey God? Do you love God? Or do you love the nice things God does for you? Who do you love most? Can you sing this song with me? <br />
<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
I love you Lord<br />
And I lift my voice<br />
To worship You.<br />
O, my soul, rejoice!<br />
Take joy my King<br />
In what You hear.<br />
May it be a sweet, sweet sound<br />
In Your ear. </blockquote>

Was the sun up? No, it was still dark. The sun was not up.<br />
<br />
<b>Jesus left the house. He went to a place where He could be alone.</b><br />
Did Jesus stay in His bed? No, Jesus left the house. <br />
Did Jesus go to a restaurant? No, Jesus did not go to a restaurant! <br />
Did Jesus want to be with people? No, Jesus wanted to be alone.<br />
<br />
<b>There Jesus prayed.</b><br />
Did Jesus eat breakfast? No, Jesus did not eat breakfast.<br />
Did Jesus go fishing? No, Jesus did not go fishing. <br />
What did Jesus do? Jesus prayed.<br />
<br />
<b>Simon and his friends went to find Jesus.</b><br />
Did Jesus go to find Simon and his friends? No, Simon and his friends went to find Jesus.<br />
Did Jesus tell Simon where He was? No, Jesus did not tell Simon where He was.<br />
<br />
<b>They told him, “Everyone is looking for You!”</b><br />
Who was looking for Jesus? Everyone was looking for Jesus.<br />
Why were they looking for Jesus? They wanted Jesus to heal more people.<br />
<br />
<b>Jesus answered, “Let’s go to another place, to the towns nearby.”</b><br />
Did Jesus want to stay in the same place? No, Jesus wanted to go to another place.<br />
Did Jesus go back to the house? No, Jesus did not go back to the house.<br />
Where did Jesus want to go? Jesus wanted to go to the towns nearby. <br />
<br />
<b>“I must preach there also. That is why I came.” </b><br />
What must Jesus do? Jesus must preach.<br />
Where must Jesus preach? Jesus must preach in the towns nearby.<br />
Why did Jesus come? Jesus came to preach. <br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<br />
<b>The sun went down. The people brought Jesus everyone who was sick. They also brought Him everyone who was controlled by demons. The whole town gathered at the door of the house. Jesus healed many people who had different kinds of illnesses. He also forced many demons to leave people. He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who Jesus was. Very early the next morning Jesus got up. It was still dark. Jesus left the house. He went to a place where He could be alone. There Jesus prayed. <br />Simon and his friends went to find Jesus. They told him, “Everyone is looking for You!” <br />Jesus answered, “Let’s go to another place, to the towns nearby. I must preach there also. That is why I came.” </b><br />
<br />
This story is in the third person. I will tell the story again in the first person. This is how the story would sound if Jesus told it. <br />
<br />
The sun went down. The people brought Me everyone who was sick. They also brought Me everyone who was controlled by demons. The whole town gathered at the door of the house. I healed many people who had different kinds of illnesses. I also forced many demons to leave people. I would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who I was. Very early the next morning I got up. It was still dark. I left the house. I went to a place where I could be alone. There I prayed. <br />
Simon and his friends went to find Me. They told Me, “Everyone is looking for You!” <br />
I answered, “Let’s go to another place, to the towns nearby. I must preach there also. That is why I came.”<br />
<br />
In this story, many people wanted Jesus to do things for them. Who wants you to do things for them? Maybe your children, or your spouse, or your boss. Maybe it’s your parents, or your friends. Maybe all of them. Do you feel stress trying to make everyone happy? <br />
<br />
Do you know why you came? What is the purpose of your life? If we know the purpose of our life, we will know when to say “yes” and when to say “no” to our friends. Jesus knew why He came. Jesus knew what His Father wanted Him to do. Jesus wanted to make His Father happy, more than He wanted to make His friends happy. He knew He had to say “no” to Simon and his friends. Instead, Jesus knew He needed to go to other towns and preach in them. Jesus found direction for His days by praying. You can find the purpose of your life, and direction for your days, the same way. Get alone. Ask God to show you what to do. Then read God’s book, the Bible. Obey what God says in the Bible. <br />

<div>
Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today I’ve got three new words for you. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first is “sheep”. Can you say “sheep”? Good job! A sheep is an animal with four legs. It says, “baaaa!” The hair of the sheep is called wool. A small sheep is called a lamb. The plural of sheep is sheep, not sheeps. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The next word is “shoulder”. Repeat after me: “shoulder”. Very good. Your shoulder is the part of your body that connects your arms to your body. If you want to play baseball, you need strong shoulders. </div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
And the last word today is “neighbor”. Neighbors are people who live near to us. Do you know your neighbors? People who live in cities often do not know their neighbors. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our story today was first told by Jesus. It’s called, “The Lost Sheep”. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>A man has one hundred sheep.</b><br />
Who has sheep? A man has sheep.<br />
How many sheep does the man have? The man has one hundred sheep. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The man loses one of his sheep.</b><br />
Is the man lost? No, the sheep is lost.<br />
How many sheep are lost? One sheep is lost.<br />
Who loses the sheep? The man loses the sheep.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The man leaves the ninety nine sheep.</b><br />
Who leaves? The man leaves.<br />
How many sheep does the man leave? The man leaves ninety nine sheep.<br />
Does the man stay with the sheep? No, the man leaves the sheep.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The man goes looking for the one lost sheep.</b><br />
Where does the man go? The man goes looking for the one lost sheep.<br />
Why does the man leave the ninety nine sheep? The man leaves to look for the lost sheep.<br />
Does the sheep look for the man? No, the man looks for the sheep.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The man keeps searching until he finds the sheep.</b><br />
How long does the man search? The man searches until he finds the sheep. <br />
Does the man find the sheep? Yes, the man finds the sheep.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>When he finds the sheep, the man is very happy.</b><br />
How does the man feel? The man is happy.<br />
When is the man happy? The man is happy when he finds the sheep.<br />
Why is the man happy? The man is happy because he found his sheep.<br />
Is the man angry at the sheep? No, the man is happy to find the sheep.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The man puts it on his shoulders and goes home.</b><br />
Where does the man put the sheep? The man puts the sheep on his shoulders.<br />
Does the sheep carry the man? No, the man carries the sheep.<br />
Where does the man go? The man goes home.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>He calls his neighbors and friends to come.</b><br />
Who calls? The man calls.<br />
Who does the man call? The man calls his neighbors and friends.<br />
What does he call them to do? He calls them to come.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>“Be happy with me! I have found my lost sheep!”</b><br />
Who should be happy? The neighbors and friends should be happy.<br />
Why should they be happy? They should be happy because the man found his sheep.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let’s listen to the whole story together. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>A man has 100 sheep. The man loses one of his sheep. The man leaves the 99 sheep.<br />The man goes looking for the one lost sheep. The man keeps searching until he finds the sheep. When he finds the sheep, the man is very happy. The man puts it on his shoulders and goes home. He calls his neighbors and friends to come. “Be happy with me! I have found my lost sheep!”</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This story is told in the present tense. Let’s change it to the past tense. First, let’s see if you know how to change these verbs to the past tense. I will say the present tense verb, and I will leave a space. You say the past tense verb. Then I will tell you the answer. See how many you know!</div>
<div>
Has … had. Has is the present tense, had is the past tense. Ready for the next ones?<br />
Loses … lost.<br />
Leaves… left.<br />
Goes… went.<br />
Keep… kept.<br />
Finds… found.<br />
Is… was.<br />
Puts… put.<br />
Calls… called.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Wow, those were hard! Normally to make a verb past tense, we add “ed” to the end of it. But in this story, most of the verbs are irregular. In this story, “call” is the only regular verb. There is no easy way to learn the past tense of irregular verbs. You just have to memorize them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Okay, now I’ll tell the whole story again in past tense. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A man had 100 sheep. The man lost one of his sheep. The man left the 99 sheep.<br />
The man went looking for the one lost sheep. The man kept searching until he found the sheep. When he found the sheep, the man was very happy. The man put it on his shoulders and went home. He called his neighbors and friends to come. “Be happy with me! I have found my lost sheep!”</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We are like sheep. We go away from our shepherd, God. We get lost. The Bible says, “All of us have gotten lost like sheep. We have each gone our own way. But God put our sin on Him (Jesus).” Jesus is like a good shepherd. Jesus did not stay with the good people. He went to look for the lost people. Jesus is very happy when He finds a lost person. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Are you lost? Ask Jesus to find you. He will bring you home. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
I’ve got five new words to teach you today. Ready? Here we go! <br />
<br />
The first word is scold. Not cold, scold. To scold means to say words that are angry or critical of someone who is doing something bad. Bill scolded his dog for eating his shoe. Did your mother scold you for getting a D on your exam?<br />
<br />
Next is belong to. To belong to means to be owned by someone. That car belongs to me. I own the car. It is mine. Belong to can also mean to be a member or part of something. She belongs to a gardening club. <br />
<br />
The next word is kingdom. A kingdom is a country ruled by a king or queen. The complete name of the country Saudi Arabia is “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”, because Saudi Arabia is ruled by a king. The United States is not a kingdom, because we are ruled by a constitution. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
The last word is like. I think you already know the word like. Do you like ice cream? Do you like to receive likes on your Facebook posts? But the word “like” has another meaning. It means “similar to”. You look like your father. That means, you look similar to your father. You do not look exactly the same as your father, but you look similar to your father. <br />
<br />
Today’s story is called, “Let the Children Come.” Let’s listen!<br />
<b></b><br />
<b>People brought their small children to Jesus.</b><br />
What did people bring? People brought their children.<br />
Did the people bring their dogs? No, the people brought their children. <br />
What size were the children? The children were small.<br />
Where did the people bring their children? They brought their children to Jesus.<br />
<br />
<b>They wanted Jesus to touch their children.</b><br />
Why did the people bring their children to Jesus? They wanted Jesus to touch their children. They wanted Him to put His hand on the heads of the children.<br />
Who wanted? The people wanted.<br />
<br />
<b>The disciples saw this.</b><br />
Who saw this? The disciples saw this.<br />
What did the disciples see? The disciples saw the people bringing their children to Jesus.<br />
<br />
<b>They scolded the parents.</b><br />
Who scolded the parents? The disciples scolded the parents.<br />
Were the disciples happy with the parents? No, the disciples scolded the parents. They told them not to bring their children to Jesus.<br />
<br />
<b>But Jesus called the little children.</b><br />
Who called? Jesus called.<br />
Whom did Jesus call? Jesus called the children.<br />
Did Jesus scold the parents? No, Jesus did not scold the parents.<br />
Did Jesus scold the children? No, Jesus called the children.<br />
Was Jesus too busy to touch the children? No, Jesus was not too busy.<br />
<br />
<b>“Let the children come to Me. Don’t stop them.”</b><br />
Who was Jesus talking to? Jesus was talking to His disciples.<br />
Who should come to Jesus? The children should come to Jesus.<br />
May the disciples stop the children from coming to Jesus? No, the disciples may not stop the children from coming to Jesus.<br />
Did Jesus agree with the disciples? No, Jesus disagreed with them. The disciples did not want the children to come to Jesus. <br />
<br />
<b>“The kingdom of God belongs to people who are like children.”</b><br />
To what kind of people does the kingdom belong? The kingdom belongs to people who are like children.<br />
Which kingdom belongs to people who are like children? The kingdom of God belongs to people who are like children.<br />
Does the kingdom of God belong to everyone? No, the kingdom of God belongs to people who are like children. <br />
<br />
<b>“Everyone must receive the kingdom of God like a child.”</b><br />
How must people receive the kingdom? They must receive it like a child.<br />
Must a person be a child to receive the kingdom? No, a person must be like a child. <br />
Can older people receive the kingdom? Yes, older people can receive the kingdom, if they receive it like a child.<br />
Are children strong? No, children are weak.<br />
Are children smart? No, children are simple. <br />
How must we be like children? Children trust. We must trust God. Children depend on someone else to give them everything they need. We must depend on God. He will give us everything we need.<br />
<br />
<b>“Otherwise, he will never enter the kingdom.”</b><br />
Who will never enter the kingdom? A person who is not like a child will never enter the kingdom.<br />
Will a person who does not trust God enter the kingdom? No, he will never enter the kingdom.<br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together now.<br />
<br />
<b>People brought their small children to Jesus. They wanted Jesus to touch their children.<br />The disciples saw this. They scolded the parents.<br />But Jesus called the little children. “Let the children come to Me. Don’t stop them. The kingdom of God belongs to people who are like children. Everyone must receive the kingdom of God like a child. Otherwise, he will never enter the kingdom.”</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Now I am going to do something different. I am going to sing! Yes, that’s right. This song is about today’s story. You can sing with me. <br />
<br />
<i>[Song]<br />Jesus loves the little children,<br />All the children of the world.<br />Red and yellow, black and white,<br />They are precious in His sight.<br />Jesus loves the little children of the world.<br /><br />Parents brought their kids to Jesus,<br />Wanting Him to touch their heads.<br />The disciples scolded them,<br />“Jesus has too much to do.<br />“He can’t love the little children of the world!”<br /><br />But then Jesus heard them talking.<br />“Let the children come to Me,<br />Simple, trusting that I care<br />And the kingdom will be theirs.<br />So I love the little children of the world.”<br /><br />If you want to enter heaven,<br />Like a child you must be.<br />Trust the words that Jesus says<br />That He died and rose again<br />For He loves the little children of the world.</i><br />
<i></i><br />
Will you enter the kingdom of God? Are you like a child? Bring your needs to Jesus. Trust Him. He will not send you away. He will welcome you. <br />

<br />
Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you two more words.<br />
<br />
The first word is care. To care means to love someone or something. To care also means to be interested in something. The man cared for his sick dog. He loved his dog and gave it medicine and good food. Mothers care for their children, even after their children are adults. They worry about their children and pray for their children. I don’t care whether you eat chicken or fish. That means, you can eat either chicken or fish. I am not concerned which meat you choose.<br />
<br />
The second word is worm. Can you say worm? It rhymes with “firm” and “germ”. A worm is a small, long, thin animal with no arms or legs. It is like a snake, but smaller, and it has no bones. It does not bite with poison like a snake. People often put worms on a hook to catch fish.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
In our last story, Jonah was sitting to the east of Nineveh. God made a plant grow up over Jonah’s head. The plant gave shade to Jonah. It protected him from the sun. Jonah was very happy. But then…<br />
<br />
<b>The next morning God sent a worm.</b><br />

<br />
<b>The sun beat down on Jonah’s head.</b><br />
What beat down? The sun beat down.<br />
Where did the sun beat down? The sun beat down on Jonah’s head.<br />
Did the plant give shade to Jonah? No, the plant was dead.<br />
<br />
<b>Jonah became very weak.</b><br />
How did Jonah feel? Jonah felt very weak.<br />
Why did Jonah feel weak? Jonah felt weak because he was hot.<br />
<br />
<b>He begged, “I want to die, not live.”</b><br />
Who was Jonah talking to? Jonah was talking to God.<br />
Who wanted to die? Jonah wanted to die.<br />
<br />
<b>But God said, “Are you right to be angry about the plant?”</b><br />
Did Jonah say he was angry? No, Jonah did not say he was angry.<br />
Was Jonah angry? Yes, Jonah was angry.<br />
Why was Jonah angry? Jonah was angry because the plant died.<br />
Was God angry? No, God was not angry.<br />
Did God kill Jonah? No, God did not kill Jonah.<br />
What did God do? God asked Jonah a question.<br />
Was Jonah right to be angry? No, Jonah was wrong to be angry.<br />
<br />
<b>Jonah said, “Yes! I’m so angry I want to die!”</b><br />
Did Jonah say he was wrong to be angry? No, Jonah said he was right to be angry.<br />
Why did Jonah want to die? Jonah wanted to die because he was angry.<br />
<br />
<b>God said, “You cared about the plant.”</b><br />
Who cared? Jonah cared.<br />
Did Jonah care about the sailors? No, Jonah did not care about the sailors.<br />
Did Jonah care about Nineveh? No, Jonah didn’t care about Nineveh.<br />
What did Jonah care about? Jonah cared about the plant.<br />
<br />
<b>“You did not work to make the plant grow.”</b><br />
Did Jonah make the plant grow? No, Jonah did not make the plant grow.<br />
Who made the plant grow? God made the plant grow.<br />
<br />
<b>“The plant grew in one night and died in one night.”</b><br />
Did the plant grow? Yes, the plant grew.<br />
How fast did the plant grow? The plant grew in one night.<br />
Did the plant die? Yes, the plant died.<br />
Why did the plant die? The plant died because the worm killed it.<br />
Did the plant die quickly? Yes, the plant died in one night.<br />
<br />
<b>“Shouldn’t I care for Nineveh, the big city?”</b><br />
Does God care? Yes, God cares.<br />
Did God care for Nineveh? Yes, God cared for Nineveh.<br />
Should God care for Nineveh? Yes, God should care for Nineveh.<br />
Did God care for Jonah? Yes, God cared for Jonah.<br />
Should Jonah care for Nineveh? Yes, Jonah should care for Nineveh.<br />
<br />
<b>“More than 120,000 people live here.”</b><br />
Where did the people live? The people lived in Nineveh.<br />
How many people lived in Nineveh? More than 120,000 people lived there.<br />
<br />
<b>“They don’t know what to do.”</b><br />
Who didn’t know what to do? The people of Nineveh didn’t know what to do.<br />
Did the people of Nineveh know how to be happy? No, they didn’t know.<br />
Did the people of Nineveh know how to become good? No, they didn’t know.<br />
Did the people of Nineveh know how to worship God? No, they didn’t know.<br />
Who should teach the people of Nineveh? Jonah should teach them.<br />
<br />
<b>“Many animals live here too.”</b><br />
Did animals live in Nineveh? Yes, animals lived in Nineveh.<br />
Does God care for animals? Yes, God cares for animals.<br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together now.<br />
<br />
<b>The next morning God sent a worm. The worm killed the plant. When the sun came up, God sent a hot wind. The sun beat down on Jonah’s head. Jonah became very weak. He begged, “I want to die, not live.”</b><br />
<b>But God said, “Are you right to be angry about the plant?”</b><br />
<b>Jonah said, “Yes! I’m so angry I want to die!”</b><br />
<b>God said, “You cared about the plant. You did not work to make the plant grow. The plant grew in one night and died in one night. Shouldn’t I care for Nineveh, the big city? More than 120,000 people live here. They don’t know what to do. Many animals live here too.”</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Do you remember what a “verb” is? A verb is the part of the sentence that tells about an action or a state of being. Every sentence must have a verb. I will tell the story again. This time, I will pause before each verb. See if you can remember the verb before I say it. Ready? Here we go!<br />
<br />
The next morning God... sent a worm. The worm... killed the plant. When the sun... came up, God... sent a hot wind. The sun… beat down on Jonah’s head. Jonah… became very weak. He... begged, “I... want to... die, not... live.”<br />
But God... said, “... Are you right to … be angry about the plant?”<br />
Jonah... said, “Yes! I’m so angry I… want to... die!”<br />
God... said, “You... cared about the plant. You did not … work to … make the plant... grow. The plant … grew in one night and … died in one night. Shouldn’t I … care for Nineveh, the big city? More than 120,000 people … live here. They don’t … know what to … do. Many animals… live here too.”<br />
Wow, this story has a lot of verbs!<br />
<br />
What do you think that Jonah did next? The Bible does not tell us. The story ends here.<br />
<br />
How many people live in your city? Does God care about them? Do you care about them? Will you tell them God’s message so that they will not be destroyed?<br />
<br />

<br />
Today I want to teach you just two words. Both words start with “sh”! Can you say “sh”? <br />
<br />
The first word is shade. Shade is the area of darkness made by something that is blocking the light. <br />
The trees in my yard give shade to the house. It’s hot, let’s sit in the shade. <br />

The other word is shelter. Can you say “shelter”? Good job! A shelter is something that covers or protects people or animals from danger or bad weather. A shelter can be something permanent like a house, or something temporary like a tent or even some branches from a tree. Sometimes very poor people use a cardboard box for shelter. Nests are shelters for birds. Many small animals find shelter in holes in the ground. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />

<br />
<b>God said to Jonah, “Are you right to be angry?” Jonah left Nineveh. He sat to the east of the city. He made a shelter for himself. He sat in the shade. He waited to see what would happen to the city.<br />God made a plant grow up quickly over Jonah. The plant gave shade to Jonah’s head. Jonah was very happy about the plant.</b><br />
<br />
This story is written in the third person. Now I will tell you it again, in the first person. This is how the story would sound if Jonah told it to us. <br />
<br />
God said to me, “Are you right to be angry?” I left Nineveh. I sat to the east of the city. I made a shelter for myself. I sat in the shade. I waited to see what would happen to the city.<br />
God made a plant grow up quickly over me. The plant gave shade to my head. I was very happy about the plant.<br />
<br />
Jonah was happy to be in a safe, comfortable place. What makes you happy? I would love to hear from you. You can write me. Go to our website, lifelineenglish.com. <br />
<br />
Jonah is happy now, but in our next story, something bad will happen to Jonah’s plant! It will be the final part of the story of Jonah. Don’t miss it! <br />
<br />
Until next time, may Jesus help you know Him and know English. Good bye!<br />

You change your mind about destroying people. So, God, please kill me. I prefer being dead to being alive.”</b><br />
<br />
I will tell the story one more time. This time, I will pause before certain words. When I pause, you can say the word that comes next. See if you can remember the word before I say it!<br />
<br />
God saw that the people of…. Nineveh turned from their …. evil. God changed His… mind. He did not … destroy them.<br />
But Jonah did not like this. Jonah became very … angry.<br />
He said to God, “I knew this would happen! I tried to… prevent this. That’s why I… ran away to Tarshish. I know You are... kind, slow to get... angry, and full of... love. You change your mind about... destroying people. So, God, please... kill me. I prefer being... dead to being... alive.”<br />
<br />
Good job! <br />
<br />
Are you like God? Are you kind, slow to anger, and full of love? Are you happy when bad people turn from their evil? Or, are you like Jonah? Are you happy when bad people are destroyed? <br />

<br />
Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you four words.<br />
<br />
The first word is throne. Can you say it? Throne. Throne. A throne is the special chair on which a king or queen sits. <br />
<br />
The next word is robe. A robe is a piece of clothing worn on top of other clothes. A robe is long and loose. Some robes are worn in public to show that a person is important. For example, judges wear robes when they are in the courtroom. But other robes are worn by people relaxing in their homes. We call these bathrobes. Who commanded? The king and his important men commanded.<br />
Did the king command by himself? No, the king and his important men commanded.<br />
What did the king command? The king commanded that no person or animal eat or drink anything.<br />

Who must wear soft clothes? No one must wear soft clothes.<br />

To whom should the people cry? The people should cry to God.<br />

Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<br />
<b>The king of Nineveh heard the news. He got up from his throne and took off his robes. He put on rough clothes and sat in ashes. He sent a message throughout Nineveh.</b><br />
<b>“The king and his important men command this! No person or animal may eat or drink anything. Every person and animal must wear rough clothes. People should cry loudly to God. Everyone must turn from his evil and violence. </b><br />
<b>“Who knows? Maybe God will change his mind. Maybe God will stop being angry. Then we won’t die.”</b><br />
<br />
This story uses a lot of pronouns. We use pronouns in place of nouns. Here is how the story would sound if we used no pronouns.<br />
<br />
The king of Nineveh heard the news. The king got up from the king’s throne and took off the king’s robes. The king put on rough clothes and sat in ashes. The king sent a message throughout Nineveh.<br />
“The king and the king’s important men command this! No person or animal may eat or drink anything. Every person and animal must wear rough clothes. People should cry loudly to God. Everyone must turn from everyone’s evil and violence. <br />
“Who knows? Maybe God will change God’s mind. Maybe God will stop being angry. Then the people of Nineveh won’t die.”<br />
<br />
Wow, that sounded very awkward! I’m so glad we use pronouns! <br />
<br />
When Jonah heard God’s message, what did Jonah do? Jonah ran away from God.<br />
When the king heard God’s message from Jonah, what did the king do? The king listened to God’s message and turned from his evil. He repented. <br />
<br />
Will Jonah be happy now? We’ll find out in our next story! <br />

Why is this story called, “The Shortest Sermon”? A sermon is a message about God. Jonah spoke God’s message to Nineveh. His sermon was only 7 words! “Nineveh will be destroyed in forty days.” <br />
<br />
How would this story sound if Jonah told it to us? Let’s listen!<br />
<br />
God spoke to me a second time. “Go to Nineveh, the big city. Preach against it the message that I give you.”<br />
I did what God said. I went to Nineveh.<br />
Nineveh was a big city. It took 3 days to walk through it.<br />
I walked 1 day. I called out, “Nineveh will be destroyed in 40 days!”<br />
The people of Nineveh believed in God. They stopped eating food. They put on rough clothes.<br />
Everyone did this, from the most important to the least important.<br />
<br />
Is your city evil, like Nineveh? Will God destroy your city? Could you help your city believe in God?<br />
<br />
What will the king of Nineveh do when he hears Jonah’s message? Will he kill Jonah? We’ll find out in our next story! <br />

Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you teach you three words.<br />
<br />
The first word is punish. To punish means to make someone suffer because they did something wrong. Criminals like thieves and drug dealers are punished by being put in prison. Very bad crimes like rape and murder may be punished by death. <br />

<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The last word is swallow. Swallow is the opposite of spit. To swallow means to move something from your mouth into your stomach. You should chew your food before you swallow. But do not swallow your chewing gum!<br />
<br />
In our last story, Jonah told the sailors to throw him into the sea. He told them that the storm would stop if they threw him into the sea. Today’s story is called, “Swallowed by a fish!”<br />

<br />
<b>The sailors cried to God, “Please don’t let us die. Please don’t punish us for killing this man. God, You did what You wanted to do.”<br />They threw Jonah into the sea. The sea became calm! The sailors feared God greatly. They made promises to God.<br />God sent a big fish. The fish swallowed Jonah. Jonah was in the stomach of the fish for 3 days and 3 nights. <br />Then Jonah prayed to God. God spoke to the fish. The fish spit Jonah up onto the dry land.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
The story is written in past tense, because it happened in the past. But how would it sound if we told the story while it was happening, in the present tense? Listen to the differences in the verbs:<br />
<br />
The sailors cry to God, “Please don’t let us die. Please don’t punish us for killing this man. God, You did what You wanted to do.”<br />
They throw Jonah into the sea. The sea becomes calm! The sailors fear God greatly. They make promises to God.<br />
God sends a big fish. The fish swallows Jonah. Jonah is in the stomach of the fish for 3 days and 3 nights. <br />
Then Jonah prays to God. God speaks to the fish. The fish spits Jonah up onto the dry land.<br />

Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you teach you three new words.<br />
<br />
Do you know what “dice” are? Dice are six-sided cubes. Usually they are made of plastic or wood. One side of the cube has one dot on it, another side has two dots, another side three dots, and so on… up through six dots. People often use dice when they play games. The dice choose a number between one and six. A person rolls the dice, but the person does not know what number will be on top of the dice until the dice stops moving. <br />
<br />
The second word is “rough”. Rough is the opposite of smooth. Something that is rough has a surface that is bumpy or uneven. Sandpaper is rough. A cat’s tongue is rough. The bark of a tree is rough. An apple is not rough. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Our last word today is “row”. To row means to move a boat or ship, by pushing wooden paddles or oars through the water. Rowing is very good exercise! <br />
<br />
In our last story, Jonah tried to run away from God in a ship. But God sent a storm onto the sea. Our story today is called, “Who’s to blame?”.<br />
<br />
When I ask you a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answers with my answers.<br />
<br />
<b>The sailors said to each other, “Let’s roll dice.”</b><br />
With whom did the sailors talk? The sailors talked to each other.<br />
What did the sailors want to do? They wanted to roll dice.<br />
<br />
<b>“Let’s find out who is to blame for this disaster.”</b><br />
Why did they want to roll dice? They wanted to find out who was to blame for this disaster.<br />
What disaster? The big storm.<br />
<br />
<b>So, they rolled dice. Jonah was picked. </b><br />
Who rolled dice? The sailors rolled dice. <br />
Who was picked? Jonah was picked. <br />
What picked Jonah? The dice picked Jonah.<br />
Who controlled the dice? God controlled the dice. <br />
Who was to blame for the storm? Jonah was to blame for the storm!<br />
<br />
<b>They asked Jonah, “How can we make the sea calm?”</b><br />
Who did they ask? They asked Jonah.<br />
Who asked Jonah? The sailors asked Jonah. <br />
Did the sailors want to kill Jonah? No, they wanted to make the sea calm.<br />
<br />
<b>“What should we do to you?”</b><br />
Did the sailors know what to do to Jonah? No, they did not know. They asked Jonah what they should do. <br />
Why should the sailors do something to Jonah? Jonah was to blame for the storm. The sailors wanted the storm to stop.<br />
<br />
<b>The sea was becoming even more rough.</b><br />
What was becoming more rough? The sea was becoming more rough.<br />
Was the storm becoming worse? Yes, the storm was becoming worse.<br />
<br />
<b>Jonah answered, “Throw me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm.”</b><br />
When will the sea become calm? The sea will become calm when the sailors throw Jonah into the sea.<br />
Did Jonah throw himself into the sea? No, Jonah told the sailors to throw him into the sea.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>“This big storm is my fault.”</b><br />
Whose fault was this big storm? This big storm was Jonah’s fault.<br />
Did Jonah pray to God? No, Jonah did not pray to God.<br />
Did Jonah say he will obey God? No, Jonah did not say he will obey God.<br />
<br />
<b>The sailors rowed very hard. They could not get to the dry land.</b><br />
Who rowed? The sailors rowed. <br />
Did Jonah row? No, Jonah did not row.<br />
Did the sailors throw Jonah into the sea? No, the sailors rowed. They did not throw Jonah into the sea.<br />
Why did the sailors row? They rowed to get to the dry land.<br />
Did the sailors get to the dry land? No, they could not get to the dry land. <br />
<br />
<b>The storm grew worse and worse.</b><br />
What grew? The storm grew.<br />
Did the storm grow more calm? No, the storm grew worse and worse!<br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together. <br />
<br />
<b>The sailors said to each other, “Let’s roll dice. Let’s find out who is to blame for this disaster.” <br />So, they rolled dice. Jonah was picked. <br />They asked, “What should we do to you? How can we make the sea calm?”<br />The sea was becoming even more rough.<br />Jonah answered, “Throw me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm. This big storm is my fault.”<br />The sailors rowed very hard. They could not get to the dry land.<br />The storm grew worse and worse.</b><br />
<br />
This story includes a lot of conversation. The story records the words of the sailors and of Jonah. They are called “direct quotations”. We can also tell what someone said indirectly. Here is how the story would sound with indirect quotations. Watch how the pronouns change (and, if you are reading the written script, how the punctuation changes). <br />
<br />
The sailors said to each other that they should roll dice and find out who was to blame for the disaster. So, they rolled dice. Jonah was picked. <br />
They asked Jonah what they should do to him and how they could make the sea calm. <br />
Jonah answered that they should throw him into the sea. He said that then the sea would become calm and that the big storm was his fault. <br />
The sailors rowed very hard. They could not get to the dry land.<br />
The storm grew worse and worse. <br />

<br />
Jonah ran away from God. God sent a storm. Jonah and all the sailors came close to death. Do other people suffer when you disobey God? In our next story, we will find out how the sea becomes calm again. <br />

Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you teach you several words.<br />
<br />
The first word is “lie”. “To lie” means to say something that is not true. The boy lied to his mother. He told her that he had not taken any cookies. The past tense of “lie” is “lied”. The politician lied to the television reporter. But “lie” can also mean “to be in a flat position on a surface” (like a bed or the ground). I usually lie on my side when I am in bed. The phone is lying on the table. The past tense of this “lie” is “lay”. The snow lay on the ground until April this year.<br />
<br />
“Lay” is also a present tense verb in English. This “lay” means “to place”. For example, we lay clean plates on the table before we eat. He is laying your clothes on your bed. I laid your wallet on your chair last night. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
The next words I want to teach you are the phrase, “about to”. “About to” is always followed by a verb. For example, “We are about to eat.” This means we will eat very soon. “The train is about to leave.” This means the train has not left yet, but it will leave soon. <br />
<br />
The last word today is “cargo”. Cargo is not something that makes your automobile go! :) Cargo is something that is carried from one place to another by a boat, airplane, or train. Freighter ships carry a lot of cargo from China to the United States. <br />
<br />
In our last story, God told Jonah to go to Nineveh. But Jonah ran away from God. Jonah got into a ship that was going to Tarshish, far away from Nineveh. But he never arrived in Tarshish. You’ll find out why today. Our story is called, “The Storm on the Sea”.<br />
<br />
When I ask you a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answers with my answers.<br />
<br />
<b>God threw a big wind on the sea. </b><br />

<br />
<b>The ship was about to break apart. </b><br />
What was about to break apart? The ship was about to break apart.<br />

<br />
<b>The sailors were afraid. </b><br />
Were the sails afraid? No, the sailors were afraid.<br />
Why were the sailors afraid? The sailors were afraid that the ship would break apart.<br />
<br />
<b>Each man cried to his own god. </b><br />
Who cried? Every man cried, all the sailors. <br />
Why did the sailors cry? The sailors cried because they were afraid.<br />
To whom did the sailors cry? The sailors cried to their own gods.<br />
Did the sailors cry to one God? No, each sailor cried to his own god. They had many different gods.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>They threw the cargo into the sea. This made the ship lighter. </b><br />
What did God throw? God threw the wind. <br />
What did the sailors throw? The sailors threw the cargo.<br />
Where did the sailors throw the cargo? The sailors threw the cargo into the sea.<br />
Why did the sailors throw the cargo into the sea? To make the ship lighter. The sailors threw the cargo into the sea to make the ship weigh less. <br />
<br />
<b>But Jonah had gone down into the ship. He had lain down and fallen asleep. </b><br />
Did Jonah cry to his God? No, Jonah did not cry to his God. <br />
Did Jonah help the sailors? No, Jonah did not help the sailors.<br />
Where was Jonah? Jonah was inside the ship.<br />
What did Jonah do? Jonah laid down and fell asleep.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>The captain went to Jonah. The captain said, “How can you sleep? Get up! </b><br />
Did the captain go to Jonah? Yes, the captain went to Jonah.<br />
Did the captain want to sleep? No, the captain did not want to sleep. <br />
Did the captain want Jonah to sleep? No, the captain wanted Jonah to get up.<br />
<br />
<b>Pray to your God! Maybe your God will notice us. Maybe He will save us!”</b><br />
What did the captain want Jonah to do? The captain wanted Jonah to pray.<br />
What did the captain want Jonah’s God to do? The captain wanted Jonah’s God to notice them and save them.<br />
Did the sailors’ gods save them? No, the sailors’ gods did not save them. <br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<br />
<b>God threw a big wind on the sea. There was a big storm. The ship was about to break apart. The sailors were afraid. Each man cried to his own god. They threw the cargo into the sea. This made the ship lighter. But Jonah had gone down into the ship. He had lain down and fallen asleep. The captain went to Jonah. The captain said, “How can you sleep? Get up! Pray to your God! Maybe your God will notice us. Maybe He will save us!”</b><br />
<br />
Now I will tell the story again. This time I will leave a space for some words. Try to remember what words go in the spaces. After the spaces, I will tell you the words. See if you can remember correctly!<br />
<br />
God threw a big….. wind on the sea. There was a big.... storm. The ship was about to… break apart. The sailors were... afraid. Each man cried to his own... god. They threw the... cargo into the sea. Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you three common phrases.<br />
<br />
The first phrase is “head for”. This does not mean that you have four heads! :) To “head for” means to move towards something or someone. For example, “When Bill is hungry, he heads for the refrigerator.” We have other phrases with “head” like “head back”, which means “to return”, and “head out”, which means “to leave”. <br />
<br />
The second phrase is “come to my attention”. When something comes to my attention, it means that I notice it. “I forgot to turn off the stove until the smell of smoke came to my attention!” “It came to the man’s attention that his air conditioner had stopped.”<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The last phrase today is “run away”. This means to move quickly in the direction opposite from something or someone. For example, “I ran away from the bees.” “The teenage boy ran away from home.” “When marriage gets tough, some people run away.”<br />
<br />
Today we start a new story about a man named Jonah. The story is called, “Jonah runs away!”<br />
<br />
When I ask you a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answers with my answers. <br />
<br />
<b>God said to Jonah, “Go to Nineveh, the big city”. </b><br />

Was the trip free? No, he paid for the trip.<br />
Who paid for the trip? Jonah paid for the trip.<br />
Did Joppa go into the ship? No, Jonah went into the ship. <br />
<br />
<b>He wanted to go to Tarshish, away from God.</b><br />
Where did Jonah want to go? Jonah wanted to go to Tarshish.<br />
Did Jonah want to be close to God? No, Jonah wanted to go away from God. Jonah thought God lived only in Israel. Tarshish is far from Israel.<br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<br />
<b>God said to Jonah, “Go to Nineveh, the big city. Preach against it. The evil of Nineveh has come to my attention.” But Jonah ran away from God. He headed for Tarshish. So he went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. He paid for the trip and went down into the ship. He wanted to go to Tarshish, away from God. </b><br />
<b></b><br />
The story is in the past tense. I will tell you the story again in the present tense. This is how the story would sound if it were happening right now. <br />
<br />
God says to Jonah, “Go to Nineveh, the big city. Preach against it. The evil of Nineveh has come to my attention.” But Jonah runs away from God. He heads for Tarshish. So he goes down to Joppa and finds a ship going to Tarshish. He pays for the trip and goes down into the ship. He wants to go to Tarshish, away from God. <br />

Hello, my name is Miss Barb! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at <a href="http://lifelineenglish.com/">lifelineenglish.com</a>.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you three words.<br />
<br />
Scatter. To scatter means to make things move in many different directions. For example, the dog caused the sheep to scatter. When I turned on the light, the cockroaches scattered. The farmer scattered his seeds in his field. <br />
<br />
Confuse. To confuse means to make something hard to understand, or to make someone have difficulty understanding. For example, “I asked Siri for directions to the restaurant. But the directions confused me.” <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Plain. When I say the word plain, I am talking about “P-L-A-I-N” and not “P-L-A-N-E.” A “P-L-A-N-E” is an airplane that carries people through the air. The word “P-L-A-I-N” has several different meanings. Do not be confused by them. Plain is the opposite of “fancy” or “elegant”. For example, Jill liked to wear dresses with bright colors and flowers on them. But her sister Nancy liked clothes that were plain. Plain also means “simple”. For example, the lawyer used big words, and confused the jury. But the judge made the lawyer say everything again with plain words. Plain also means a large area of flat ground with no trees. In the central part of the United States there are some very large plains. <br />
<br />
After the flood, God told the people to spread out all over the earth. But the people did not want to obey God. What happened? You’ll find out now. Today’s story is called, “The Tower.”<br />
<br />
When I ask you a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answers with my answers. <br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>The whole world spoke one language. Everyone used the same words. </b>How many languages did the world speak? The world spoke only one language.<br />
Did everyone use different words? No, everyone used the same words.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>The people moved east and found a plain in Shinar. They settled there. </b>What direction did the people move? The people moved east.<br />
What did the people find? The people found a plain.<br />
Where was the plain? The plain was in Shinar.<br />
Who settled in the plain? The people settled in the plain.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>They said to each other, “Come! Let’s make bricks and bake them well.” </b>Did the people bake cookies? No, the people baked bricks.<br />
How much did the people bake the bricks? They baked the bricks well.<br />
Did the bricks bake the people? No, the people baked the bricks.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>They used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar. </b> <br />
Did the people use stone? No, the people used brick instead of stone.<br />
What did they use for mortar? They used tar instead of mortar.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Then they said, “Come! Let’s build a city for ourselves! </b><br />
Who was the city for? The city was for the people.<br />
Was the city for God? No, the city was for the people.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Let’s build a tower that reaches to heaven. </b><br />
What did the people want to build? The people wanted to build a tower.<br />
Did they want to build a short tower? No, they wanted to build a tall tower.<br />
Did they want to build a tower to the moon? No, they wanted to build a tower to heaven.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Let’s make a name for ourselves. </b><br />
Did the people want to make a name for God? No, the people wanted to make a name for themselves.<br />
Did the people want to become famous? Yes, they wanted to be famous.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>If we don’t, we will be scattered over all the earth.” </b><br />
Did the people want to be scattered over all the earth? No, the people wanted to stay in the plain of Shinar.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>But God came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.</b><br />
Who came down? God came down.<br />
Why did God come down? God came down to see the city and the tower.<br />
Did the tower reach to heaven? No, God came down to see it.<br />
Was God building the city and the tower? No, the people were building the city and the tower.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>God said, “These people are united. They speak the same language. </b>Did the people work together? Yes, the people were united.<br />
Did the people understand each other? Yes, the people spoke the same language.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>This is only the beginning of what they will do. They will be able to do anything they want. </b>Is the tower the last thing the people will do? No, the tower is only the beginning.<br />
What are the people able to do? The people are able to do anything they want. <br />
When people speak the same language, they can do big things together. <br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Come! Let’s go down and confuse their language. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.” </b>What did God do to their language? God confused their language. <br />
Did the people understand each other? No, the people were not able to understand each other. <br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>So God scattered them from there over all the earth. </b>Who scattered the people? God scattered the people.<br />
How did God scatter the people? God scattered the people by confusing their language.<br />
Where did the people go? The people went over all the earth. <br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>They stopped building the city. So the city is called “Babel”. </b>Did the people continue building the city? No, the people stopped building the city.<br />
Why did the people stop building the city? The people stopped building the city because they were not able to understand each other. <br />
What is the name of the city? The name of the city is Babel. Babel means “confusion”. <br />
What did the people plan? The people planned that they would stay in one city. <br />
What did God plan? God planned that they would live all over the world. <br />
Whose plan was better? God’s plan was better than the people’s plan. <br />
Whose plan happened? God’s plan happened. <br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>The whole world spoke one language. Everyone used the same words. The people moved east and found a plain in Shinar. They settled there. They said to each other, “Come! Let’s make bricks and bake them well.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar. Then they said, “Come! Let’s build a city for ourselves! Let’s build a tower that reaches to heaven. Let’s make a name for ourselves. If we don’t, we will be scattered over all the earth.” </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>But God came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. God said, “These people are united. They speak the same language. This is only the beginning of what they will do. They will be able to do anything they want. Come! Let’s go down and confuse their language. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.” So God scattered them from there over all the earth. They stopped building the city. So the city is called “Babel”. </b><br />

[Song] “Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life. Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life.”<br />
<br />
Hello, I’m Mrs. B! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you three words.<br />
<br />
The first word is “best”. Best means “better than all others in quality or value.” “Best” rhymes with “rest” and “nest”. Okay, now you say “best”! That sounded good, but was that your best effort? I think you can do better. Try again. Say “Best”. Excellent! <br />
<br />
The second word is “accept”. Can you say “accept”? Accept. Don't get the word “accept” confused with “except”. In the story accept is used in two ways. It means “to receive or take something offered”. They offered him the job, and he accepted it. Accept also means, “to allow someone to be part of a group; to look with favor or approval upon someone.”<br />
John accepted Tom as a Facebook friend. The opposite of accept is to reject. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
The third word is “attack”. Repeat after me. Attack. Attack. To attack means to begin to harm, injure, or destroy something. Insects attacked the crops. The lion attacked the zebra. <br />
<br />
The first man Adam and his wife Eve had two sons. The sons’ names were Cain and Abel. Today’s story is about Cain and Abel. Today’s story is called, “Two Gifts.”<br />
<br />
When I ask a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answer with my answer. <br />
<br />
<b>Abel guarded sheep, but Cain worked the ground. </b><br />
Who guarded sheep? Abel guarded sheep.<br />
Did Cain work? Yes, Cain worked the ground.<br />
Did Abel work the sheep? No, Abel guarded the sheep.<br />
<br />
<b>One day Cain brought a gift to the Lord. </b><br />
Who brought a gift? Cain brought a gift.<br />
To whom did Cain bring a gift? Cain brought a gift to the Lord. <br />
<br />
<b>He brought some food from the ground. </b><br />
What did Cain bring? Cain brought some food. <br />
Where did the food come from? The food came from the ground.<br />
Did Cain bring an animal? No, Cain brought some plants.<br />
<br />
<b>And Abel brought the best parts of his best sheep. </b><br />
Did Abel bring plants? No, Abel brought the best parts of his best sheep.<br />
Did Abel bring bad sheep? No, Abel brought his best sheep.<br />
<br />
<b>The Lord accepted Abel and his gift. </b><br />
Did the Lord accept the gift of the animal? <br />
Yes, the Lord accepted the gift of the sheep. <br />
Whose gift did the Lord accept? The Lord accepted Abel and his gift. <br />
<br />
<b>But the Lord did not accept Cain and his gift. </b><br />
Did the Lord accept the gift of the food taken from the ground ? <br />
No, the Lord did not accept the gift of the food taken from the ground . <br />
Was there something wrong with the food ? <br />
No, there was nothing wrong with the food. The food was good for people to eat.<br />
Did the Lord accept Cain’s gift? No, the Lord did not accept Cain and his gift. <br />
Why didn’t the Lord accept Cain and Cain’s gift? Abel knew he was a sinner. Abel knew his sins deserved punishment. He brought sheep to God and killed the sheep. The blood of the sheep covered Abel’s sins. Then God could accept Abel. Cain did not believe he was a sinner. Cain did not think his sins needed to be covered. So Cain did not bring an animal. God cannot accept gifts from people whose sins are not covered. The fig leaves could not cover the sins of Adam and Eve. In the same way, the plants from the ground can’t cover Cain’s sins. So God did not accept Cain or Cain’s gift. <br />
<br />
<b>So Cain became very angry and looked unhappy. </b><br />
How did Cain feel? Cain felt very angry.<br />
How did Cain look? Cain looked unhappy.<br />
When did Cain become angry and unhappy? Cain became angry and unhappy when God did not accept his gift. <br />
<br />
<b>The Lord asked Cain, “Why are you angry? </b><br />
Did Cain ask the Lord a question? No, the Lord asked Cain a question.<br />
Was God angry? No, Cain was angry. <br />
<br />
<b>Why do you look so unhappy?</b><br />
Who looked unhappy? Cain looked unhappy.<br />
Was God unhappy? No, Cain was unhappy.<br />
Did God know why Cain was unhappy? Yes, God knew why Cain was unhappy.<br />
Why did God ask Cain these questions? God wanted Cain to study his heart. <br />
<br />
<b>If you do good, you will be well.</b> <br />
Who will be well? Cain will be well.<br />
When will Cain be well? Cain will be well if he does good. <br />
<br />
<b>But if you do not do good, sin is ready to attack you. </b><br />
Will Cain be well if Cain does not do good? No, Cain will not be well. Sin is ready to attack him.<br />
Will God attack Cain? No, sin will attack Cain. <br />
Will sin attack Abel? No, sin will attack Cain.<br />
When will sin attack Cain? Sin will attack Cain if he does not do good.<br />
<br />
<b>Sin wants you. But you must rule over it.”</b><br />
Does sin want God? No, sin wants Cain.<br />
Who must rule over sin? Cain must rule over sin. <br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<br />
<b>Abel guarded sheep, but Cain worked the ground. One day Cain brought a gift to the Lord. He brought some food from the ground. And Abel brought the best parts of his best sheep. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift. But the Lord did not accept Cain and his gift. So Cain became very angry and looked unhappy. The Lord asked Cain, “Why are you angry? Why do you look so unhappy? If you do good, you will be well. But if you do not do good, sin is ready to attack you. Sin wants you. But you must rule over it.”</b><br />
This story is in the third person. Let’s change the story to the first person. This is how the story would sound if Cain told it. <br />
<br />
Abel guarded sheep, but I worked the ground. One day I brought a gift to the Lord. I brought some food from the ground. And Abel brought the best parts of his best sheep. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift. But the Lord did not accept me and my gift. So I became very angry and looked unhappy. The Lord asked me, “Why are you angry? Why do you look so unhappy? If you do good, you will be well. But if you do not do good, sin is ready to attack you. Sin wants you. But you must rule over it.”<br />

Hello, I’m Mrs. B! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you three words.<br />
<br />
The first word is angel. Repeat after me: angel. Angel. Angels are powerful beings created by God. They are much stronger than humans. Usually, humans cannot see angels; they are invisible. Most angels are good. They always obey God. But some angels rebelled against God. One of these bad angels is named Satan. The other bad angels now obey Satan. <br />
<br />
The second word is sword. Sword rhymes with “Lord”. Can you say sword? Sword. A sword is a sharp weapon, usually made of metal. It is similar to a knife, but longer, and it is shorter than a spear. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
The last word today is spin. Spin rhymes with “win”. Please say the word “spin”. Spin. To spin means to turn around rapidly. The past tense of “spin” is “spun”. <br />
<br />
In our last two stories, God judged the snake, the woman, and the man for disobeying God. He told them bad things that would happen to them. But God was not finished. Today’s story is called, “Clothed and Sent Out.” <br />
<br />
When I ask a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answer with my answer. <br />
<br />
<b>The Lord God made clothes from animal skins for Adam and his wife. </b><br />
Who made clothes? The Lord God made clothes.<br />
Did God make clothes for the snake? No, God made clothes for Adam and his wife.<br />
Did Adam and his wife have clothes before? Yes, they had clothes before.<br />
Who made their first clothes? Adam and his wife made their first clothes. <br />
From what were their first clothes made? Their first clothes were made from fig leaves.<br />
Did the fig tree die when Adam and his wife took its leaves? No, the tree did not die.<br />
From what did God make clothes? God made clothes from animal skins.<br />
Did the animals die when God took their skins? Yes, the animals died.<br />
<br />
<b>And so the Lord dressed them. </b><br />
Did God shame them? No, God dressed them. God covered their shame. <br />
Whom did God dress? God dressed Adam and his wife. <br />
<br />
<b>Then the Lord God said, “Look, the man has become like one of us.</b>The man became like whom? The man became like God.<br />
Did the man become God? No, the man did not become God. The man became like God. <br />
Did God say, “The man has become like Me?” No, God said, “The man has become like one of Us.”<br />
Was God speaking to the man? No, God was not speaking to the man. There is one God. God is three beings: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The three beings were speaking to each other about the man. That is why God said, “The man has become like one of Us.”<br />
<br />
<b>He knows good and evil. </b><br />
Does he know algebra? No, he knows good and evil.<br />
Who knows good and evil? The man knows good and evil. <br />
Who also knows good and evil? God knows good and evil. <br />
In what way did the man become like God? The man became like God in knowing good and evil.<br />
How did the man learn good and evil? He learned good and evil by eating fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. <br />
Was it good for the man to know good and evil? No, it was bad to know good and evil. <br />
<br />
<b>And now he must not eat fruit from the tree of life. </b><br />
Who must not eat? The man must not eat.<br />
What must the man not eat? The man must not eat fruit from the tree of life.<br />
<br />
<b>If he does, he will live forever.” </b><br />
If who does? If the man does.<br />
If the man does what? If the man eats from the tree of life.<br />
What will happen if the man eats from the tree of life? He will live forever. If the man eats from the tree of life, he will live forever. <br />
Is living forever always good? No. Living forever is only good if we live with God. To live forever away from God would be horrible. <br />
<br />
<b>So the Lord God sent the man out of the garden of Eden. </b><br />
Where did the man go? The man went out of the garden of Eden.<br />
Who sent the man out? God sent the man out.<br />
Why did God send the man out? God sent the man out so that he would not eat from the tree of life. <br />
<br />
<b>He had to work the ground he was taken from. </b><br />
Who was taken from the ground? The man was taken from the ground.<br />
Did the man have to lie on the ground? No, the man had to work the ground. He had to plow it and plant seeds and kill weeds. <br />
<br />
<b>The Lord God forced the man out. </b><br />
Did the man choose to go? No, the man did not choose to go. The Lord God forced him to go.<br />
<br />
<b>Then He put angels on the east side of the garden of Eden. </b><br />
Did he put a wall? No, he put angels.<br />
Who put angels? God put angels.<br />
Where did God put the angels? God put the angels on the east side of the garden.<br />
<br />
<b>He also put a sword of fire there. </b><br />
Did he put a door there? No, he put a sword there.<br />
Who put a sword there? God put a sword there.<br />
Where did God put a sword? God put a sword on the east side of the garden of Eden.<br />
<br />
<b>The sword spun around in every direction. </b><br />
Did the sword spin? Yes, the sword spun around in every direction.<br />
Was the sword dangerous? Yes, the sword could kill a person. <br />
<br />
<b>The angels and sword guarded the way to the tree of life. </b><br />
What did the angels and sword do? The angels and sword guarded. <br />
What did they guard? They guarded the way to the tree of life.<br />
Could the man and the woman go to the tree of life? No, they could not. The angels and the sword kept the man and the woman from going to the tree of life. <br />
<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<br />
<b>The Lord God made clothes from animal skins for Adam and his wife. And so the Lord dressed them. Then the Lord God said, “Look, the man has become like one of us. He knows good and evil. And now he must not eat fruit from the tree of life. If he does, he will live forever.” So the Lord God sent the man out of the garden of Eden. He had to work the ground he was taken from. The Lord God forced the man out. Then He put angels on the east side of the garden of Eden. He also put a sword of fire there. The sword spun around in every direction. The angels and sword guarded the way to the tree of life. </b><br />
This story is in the past tense. Let’s change it to the future tense. This is how it would sound if we told the story before it happened. <br />
<br />
The Lord God will make clothes from animal skins for Adam and his wife. And so the Lord will dress them. Then the Lord God will say, “Look, the man has become like one of us. He knows good and evil. And now he must not eat fruit from the tree of life. If he does, he will live forever.” So the Lord God will send the man out of the garden of Eden. He will have to work the ground he was taken from. The Lord God will force the man out. Then He will put angels on the east side of the garden of Eden. He will also put a sword of fire there. The sword will spin around in every direction. The angels and sword will guard the way to the tree of life. <br />

Hello, I’m Mrs. B! Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.<br />
<br />
You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.<br />
<br />
Today I want to teach you three words.<br />
<br />
The first word is weed. Weed rhymes with “need”. Repeat the word “weed”. Weed. A weed is a plant that we don’t want. Carrots and beans will grow if you plant carrot and bean seeds. You don't have to plant weed seeds! Weeds grow on their own. If your garden has weeds, you need to pull them out of the ground. Then the good plants will have room to grow. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The second word is thorn. Say the word “thorn”. It rhymes with “horn”. Thorn. A thorn is a sharp point on a plant. If you touch a thorn, it hurts. Roses have thorns. Many weeds have thorns. When Jesus was killed, they put a crown of thorns on His head. <br />
<br />
The third word is sweat. Sweat rhymes with “wet”. Can you say “sweat”? Sweat. Sweat is the water that appears on top of your skin when you are hot or nervous. Sweat helps to control the temperature of our bodies. When you sweat, your shirt gets wet! <br />
<br />
In our last story, God judged the snake and the woman for their sins. But God did not forget the man. Today’s story is called, “God Judges the Man.”<br />
<br />
When I ask a question, I will leave a space. You can answer my question. Then I will say the answer. You can compare your answer with my answer. <br />
<br />
<b>Then God said to the man, “You listened to your wife. </b> <br />
Did the man listen to the snake? No, the man didn’t listen to the snake. <br />
To whom did the man listen? The man listened to his wife. <br />
<br />
<b>You ate from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from. </b><br />
Did the man eat a vegetable? No, the man ate fruit from the tree.<br />
What did God command the man not to eat? God commanded the man not to eat from that tree.<br />
Did the man eat from that tree? Yes, he ate fruit from that tree. <br />
<b><br />So I am putting a curse on the ground because of what you did. </b><br />
Who is putting a curse? God is putting a curse.<br />
Where is God putting a curse? God is putting a curse on the ground.<br />
Why is God putting a curse on the ground? God is putting a curse on the ground because the man sinned. <br />
Did God put a curse on the tree? No, God put a curse on the ground. <br />
<br />
<b>By painful work all your life, you will eat food from the ground. </b><br />

<br />
Let’s listen to the whole story together.<br />
<br />
<b>Then God said to the man,<br />“You listened to your wife. You ate from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from. So I am putting a curse on the ground because of what you did. By painful work all your life, you will eat food from the ground. The ground will produce thorns and weeds for you. And you will eat the plants of the field.<br />You will sweat and work hard<br /> for your bread.<br />Then you will return to the ground.<br /> This is because you were taken from the ground.<br />You are dust.<br /> And you will return to the dust.</b><br />
<br />
God’s words are in the second person. Let’s change them to first person. This is how God’s words would sound if Adam told us God's words.<br />
<br />
“I listened to my wife. I ate from the tree that God commanded me not to eat from. So God is putting a curse on the ground because of what I did. By painful work all my life, I will eat food from the ground. The ground will produce thorns and weeds for me. And I will eat the plants of the field. I will sweat and work hard for my bread. Later I will return to the ground. This is because I was taken from the ground. I am dust. And I will return to the dust.”<br />
<br />
Because God is good, He cannot ignore our sin. God cannot pretend that we have done nothing wrong. God must punish our sin. God punished the woman with pain in childbirth and problems in marriage. God punished the man with painful work and death. But God also promised that one day, a male descendant of the woman would strike the snake’s head. <br />
